Discipleship

Christian disciples feel they have the call of God upon their lives, in a  life-long journey of exploration into the heart of God’s love.

The  journey involves a call to follow Jesus in heart, imagination and imitation, and becomes a gradual process of inner transformation of character and outer transformation of life style.

Methodists emphasise

  • Personal prayer,  Bible study and corporate worship, (Scriptural Holiness)
  • Personal acts of kindness and corporate acts of challenging unjust structures, and making a difference in the community. (Social Holiness)

We have an evangelistic imperative to spread Scriptural Holiness as we make visible the signs of the in-breaking Kingdom of God and learn to speak of the ‘hope’ we have within us.

Discipleship needs to be worked out in ‘church gathered’ (in relationship with other Christians intentionally putting God at the centre) and ‘church dispersed’ engaged in the world and making a difference for the Kingdom.

Matthew 9:9:  As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me’.
And he got up and followed him.

Discipleship is a call to Kingdom living. ‘You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world; love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.’
